Why we held the contest this year –    Each July

we’ve hold our an annual Photo Walk to capture the city’s South Side neighborhood in photos, but due to the pandemic this annual gathering was canceled.
But we didn’t want to stop documenting everyday life.

So in discussing with our past Photo Walk leaders

we worked to figure out a  way to still capture Syracuse in photos: How is life continuing despite the coronavirus; how are children coping; changes made for social distancing.
And as we discussed planning, .

George Floyd was murdered and protests began nationwide
We wanted to also capture how Syracuse responded

To help incentivize more to go out independently to take photos and participate, we added prizes, having it evolve into a contest with the goal to continue to have the community capture this moment in time.
What they win:    1st Place Winners Receive – Complimentary Light Work lab membership and subscription to its publication, Contact Sheet.
2nd Place Winners Receive – $50 in ‘market money’ to spend at any of the soon-to-open downtown food stalls in Salt City Market.

3rd Place Winners Receive – $25 gift certificate to Joe’s to Go
Newly opened takeaway spot on the Near Westside known for its variety of wings
